Story of Reiki:
brief trip from Mikao Usui until today, among myth and truth

Mikao Usui was born in the village Taniai-Mura the 15 th of August 1865. Buddist, he visited Europe and America and he studied in China. He wished to have success in his life, but he met many difficulties. Depressed because of those troubles, Usui climbed the sacred mountain Kurama in Kyoto (the ancient capital of Japan) and after having meditated fasting for 21 days, he suddenly felt a great Energy on himself, he became enlighted and got the Reiki treatment.

At the beginning he used to give Reiki treatments only to himself and his family's members, finding out its fast efficiency. Usui decided that it was better share the benefits of this technique with all the population, instead of using it only to guarantee a wealth to his family. In 1922, in Aoyama, Tokyo, Mikao Usui founded the “Usui Reiki Rioho Gakkai” to teach Reiki. People came from very far places to try Usui Reiki treatments.
In September 1923, there was a big earthquake and Mikao Usui cured and saved many people. He died the 9th of March 1926 in Fukuyama, close to Hiroshima.

Chujiro Hayashi (1879-1940) was a captain of the Japanese Imperial Navy. Usui's student, he became Reiki master (Reiki teacher) in 1925, after he retired from the navy. He opened his own Reiki clinic in Shinano-Cho, Tokyo, and he had the great merit of diffusing the Reiki technique in most of Japan, even if it was slitley modify compare to the one that the teacher Mikao Usui had taught him. Hawayo Takata (1900-1980), a Japanese-American born in Hawaii, arrived to Hayashi's clinic because

she suffered from a very bad illness. Thanks to Hayashi's Reiki treatments, she got completely healed in four months. She remained in the Japanese clinic as a student for about a year before going back to Hawaii. Hayashi went to visit her in Hawaii in1938 and made her Reiki master. Miss Takata adapted the traditional Japanese Reiki technique to western mentality (inventing for instance that Mikao Usui was a catholic University teacher and that Reiki was an ancient Indian technique). She opened her own Reiki school and created twenty-two Reiki master, which diffused the hands healing method in the all west, then it went back “americanized” in 1984 in Japan, getting more and more popular.

But the tradizional Usui sensei's technique didn't get lost in the various adaptations that Takata gave it. In fact in Japan, another Chujiro Hayashi's student, Miss. Chiyoko Yamaguchi (1921-2003), was teaching the original technique she had learnt from her teacher.

Miss Yamaguchi's very important student is the Buddhist monk Hyakuten Inamoto, founder of Komyo Reiki Kai. At the moment he is busy in many parts of Europe and in the American continent, to teach Reiki and take the treatments, symbols and techniques of tradizional Japanese Reiki by Mikao Usui, back to the origin. In 2004, already initiated to American method of Reiki, I had the luck to meet the Rev. Hyakuten, which welcomed me in his school, teaching me the traditional Japanese Reiki and

become the first Italian Reiki teacher of the school Komyo Reiki Kai.

But which are the differences between the traditional Japanese school and the American techniques?

First of all the story of Usui sensei. In the western Reiki, Mikao Usui was a University catholic professor. His students asked why Jesus and Buddha could cure just laying the hands on a body. Because of that, Usui sensei went to India to study the ancient Buddhist Tibetan writings and found out Reiki. Accordino to Japanese tradition, Usui sensei was instead a Buddhist which received Reiki after a period of meditation.

We can find other main differences in symbols. Many symbols with their relative mantra of traditional Reiki had been changed in American Reiki. In the western modifications, have been introduced also new symbols that never existed before.

Even the method to give the attunements ( reiju we need to receive a new Reiki level) is different for technique and number.
